This beautiful woman is a geiko, a woman who has been refining and passing down the traditional arts of Kanazawa.
In the Santyayagai (Higashi, Nishi, and Kazue-cho) within Kanazawa, Kanazawa geiko still practice rigorously every day and carry on the traditions handed down from generation to generation.
In this article, we will explain how to see geiko in training, which is usually difficult to see, and how to experience ozashiki taiko drumming, which is held at the same time!
What is Kanazawa Geigi?
Geigi are women who entertain customers at teahouses. In Kanazawa, there are three teahouse districts: Higashi Chaya-gai, Nishi Chaya-gai, and Kazue-cho Chaya-gai.
Each geiko belongs to a teahouse, which in turn belongs to one of the three teahouses mentioned earlier.
It is difficult to meet geiko!
As the famous 「No first-time visitors!」 indicates, in fact, you can only enter a teahouse with geiko through an introduction by a regular customer.
However, during the months of July and August, geiko that usually only regular customers can see, and even regular customers can rarely see geiko in training, are specially shown only during the summer season!
You can also experience playing the ozashiki taiko drum played by the geiko at the same time, so please do not miss this opportunity to join us!
