“A modern version of the Nazca Lines” GPS art events will be held one after another from April 20 (free of charge) 【Kanazawa Event】

Have you heard of 「GPS Art」, which is attracting attention as a fusion of sports and art? Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture is active in this activity and aims to become 「GPS Art City = Kanazawa」. Starting with the 「Walking International Cooperation and Support Noto! Kanazawa GPS Art Walk with Live Run」 scheduled for Saturday, April 20, there will be online events continuing throughout May and 「Hokuiku Art Club GPS Art Experience」 on Sunday, May 19.

What is GPS Art?

It is an artistic sport that uses the functionality provided by smartphones and other devices to display and record one’s location. By walking or jogging, participants draw pictures and text on a map.

According to GPS artist Motoi Ishikawa of the Hokuriku GPS Art Department, it is also called 「a modern version of the Nazca Lines」.

The video (approx. 11 min.) produced by the Kanazawa City Sports Organization shows a tour of Utatsuyama Park, Higashi Chaya-machi, Chikagemachi, Kanazawa Station, and the ruins of Kanazawa Castle in Kanazawa, as well as an interview with Motoi Ishikawa.

Event Details

*『Walking International Cooperation and Noto Support! Kanazawa GPS Art Walk with Live Run』 will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Shiratori Road (in front of the Shiratori statue) in Sotobori Park.
Also, the online event 『Let’s draw together! International Cooperation x GPS Art Walk』 will be held from April 20 to May 31.

*『GPS Art Experience｜Let’s draw on the ground!』will meet at Kanazawa Minami Sogo Undo Koen on Sunday, May 19. (9:30 – 11:30 for the jogging session – 13:30 – 15:30 for the trial session).
