The 『The World of Jiro Ota Exhibition』 of original drawings by Jiro Ota (1923 – March 1982), a cartoonist and picture book author known for 『Korisu no Pokko-chan』 and other works, will be held in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Don’t miss it as it is only available during GW from May 2 to May 5.
『Jiro Ota’s World Exhibition』 lands in Ishikawa Prefecture
The first original art exhibition featuring Jiro Ota, 『The World of Jiro Ota』 (free admission), was held in Akihabara, Tokyo, in February 2020 and attracted much attention. The exhibition has been held in winter 2020, summer 2022, and summer 2023, and this spring, the fifth exhibition will be held at Niigata City Manga no Ie from March 22 to May 21.
In the midst of all this, a local event will be held for four days during the period from May 2 (Thu.) to 5 (Sun.) at the Owari-cho Citizens’ Cultural Center in the Owari-cho shopping district of Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, although only for a short period of time.
Works left by Jiro Ota
Jiro Ota was born in Tokyo on January 2, 1923, and made his debut as a cartoonist in 1941, drawing 『Kuro-chan in the Mountain』 and the sumo cartoon 『Ganbare Ganta』. His animal cartoon 『Korisu no Pokko-chan』 was serialized in 「Kobato」, a children’s magazine first published in 1958. Mr. Ota produced many works, including cartoons, picture books, and the 「Illustrated Manga Japanese History」 series, until his sudden death in 1982 at the age of 59 due to a myocardial infarction.
He also serialized 『Kaiju Bouska』, 『Oraa Guzura dado』, 『Haxon Daimaou』, 『Chibira-kun』, and 『Minashigo-Hutch』 in magazines for kindergarten and early elementary school students.
