Around June last year, a 「sashimi vending machine」 appeared at Omimachi Market, a tourist spot in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, called “Kanazawa Citizens’ Kitchen”. Since it is not something that can be found anywhere, people who encountered it for the first time reported seeing it.
What can I buy from a sashimi vending machine?
Three sashimi vending machines were installed at Omimachi Market by Oguchi Suisan Co.
When interviewed by Ishikawa TV’s 『Ishikawa-san Live News It!』 interviewed Mr. Araki, executive director of Oguchi Suisan, who said that he came up with the idea of vending machines in the midst of the Corona disaster in order to respond to the public’s opinion that 「there is nothing to eat when you come around 4 p.m. (when the fish is sold out)」.
The refrigerated vending machine sells sashimi and fried food that can be purchased for a single coin (500 yen), while the frozen vending machine sells 「Nodoguro-dashi chazuke」 and other items for tourists, with a shelf life of 30 days.
A person who actually purchased sashimi from a sashimi vending machine tweeted, 「Chewy and not too smelly, much tastier than bad sashimi!」.
Various sashimi vending machines across the country
The appearance of a sashimi vending machine in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, was covered in the news around November 2022, and here 「Torohokke Sashimi」 (1,000 yen) and 「Maguro Salami」 (1,500 yen) were introduced.
Various other sashimi vending machines were posted on Twitter from all over Japan, including a 「whale sashimi vending machine」 and a 「goat sashimi」 vending machine.
