「Tanabata Festival Parade」 and 「Tanzaku Decorating Experience」 by children

The Asano River 「Sasa Nagashi」 is held every year on the Saturday and Sunday near July 7, and this year the event is scheduled to be held on July 9 (Sat.) and 10 (Sun.). The 「Sasa-nagashi」 is based on a tradition that wishes written on tanzaku (paper strips) will be fulfilled by the flow of the Asanogawa River.

At 6 o’clock in the evening, children parade around the town in a 「Tanabata parade」 carrying bamboo branches decorated with Tanabata ornaments, and when they reach Umeno Bridge, they throw them into the Asano River.

The tanzaku decorations on the bamboos are made from 「paper that couldn’t be a box」, a product developed by Nanao City package manufacturer 「Aska Shoji」 that utilizes scrap wood from the paper box manufacturing process.

There are also ways for non-locals to participate in the 「Sasa nagashi」. In the 「Tanzaku Decorating Experience」, visitors can write their wishes on the tanzaku strips of paper provided at the tanzaku decoration booth in the Hashiba-cho green area and decorate the bamboo branches (the program will end when all the strips of paper are gone). The bamboos will be decorated at Ume-no-Bashi on the 9th and 10th. The participation fee is a 「donation」 and there is no set amount, and the money will be donated to nearby children’s kindergartens and kindergartens.
