Ishikawa is also under a manbo zone, and with all the restrictions on activities, cancelled events, and self-restraint, I’m feeling a bit wistful.

It is precisely at times like this that I want to relax and rest my mind in a quiet space.

In this issue, we talk about a talk event by Ushioko Fukumoto, one of Japan’s leading indigo dyeing craftspeople.

And a little history of indigo dyeing.

Indigo dyeing is a method of dyeing fabrics using a plant called “Tadeai” and dyed cloth. It is said to be the oldest dyeing method in the world.

It was introduced to Japan from China via the Korean Peninsula in the Nara period (710-794) and became very popular from the Edo period (1603-1868) onward. It is said that all kinds of fabrics were dyed with indigo.

In the late Meiji period (1868-1912), “indo-ai,” which is cheap and can be dyed well, emerged, and the demand for domestically produced “tade-ai” went into decline. Currently, chemically synthesized indigo dye, which is inexpensive and can be mass-produced, is the mainstream.

I love the indigo gradient.

Blue has a calming and relaxing effect, and indigo, also in the blue family, has the most calming effect of all the colors.

It is also strongly related to the endocrine system and is said to be a color that relieves low thyroid function, headaches, backache, and other pains.

It’s going to be a healing time in many ways.
